Windlaw head to Blairdardie on Saturday to take on Crosslands on what is the final leg of the season with the first of three games in five days that will wrap up the campaign. Having now cemented a finish of no worse than sixth place, the team will be looking to collect as many points as possible from the final matches. George McGregor and Kevin Black are both missing as the squad is again stretched to the full. Kick-off is 2pm and the referee is Jack Magoogan. Crosslands will line up in sky blue and white with Windlaw in all green.

AS Airdrie 5-0 Windlaw

No, this is not a misprint, it was actually 5-0 to Airdrie in what can only be described as the most farcical game ever to take place in the history of the SSMFL. Airdrie led 1-0 after a rare attack but Windlaw were still in the game. That was until McCann was caught with a late tackle and when "referee" Colin Campbell completely lost the plot and conspired to give most decisions against Windlaw. Please do not interpret this as sour grapes, overall Airdrie probably deserved to win the game, but the refereeing certainly helped them on their way. A former league official was at the game and certainly agreed with Windlaw's assessment of Campbell. This was not a 5-0 game by any means. Only 2 of the 5 goals were clearly offside and the foul for the penalty award actually took place outside the box, but let's sweep that under the carpet. Airdrie did score a fine goal to make it 2-0 when a fine corner was bulletted home at the near post. Credit where it's due. Beyond that, it's very difficult to make any further comment without fear of writing anything that could be interpreted as slanderous or libelous. Windlaw will take the matter up privately with the league committee.

Riverside have progressed to the Semi Final stage for the second consecutive year after a 2-1 win over Kelvinbank Star, as have Clydebank Utd who defeated Victoria Park 4-3 on penalties after a 3-3 draw in 90 minutes.

Windlaw Tote News
8 April

Just before Christmas, Windlaw informed all tote participants that a rule had been implemented whereby if anyone was more than 3 weeks behind with payments, the person in question would not receive their winnings if their numbers came up. Instead, the player's outstanding debt would be paid off from the prize fund and any remaining prize fund would rollover to the following week. This was the situationwe faced this week, and we have been forced to implement this rule. Therefore, one unlucky player's numbers came up, but he will not receive his winnings.

Let this be a lesson on the importance of keeping up with your tote payments!!

Castlemilk Football Development Strategy Emerges

The club have been in meetings this week with Glasgow City Council and fellow Castlemilk teams with a view to improving the poor footballing facilities within Castlemilk. The main item discussed was the possible redevelopment of Barlia Sports Complex, hopefully in the near future. Windlaw will continue to be heavily involved in discussions on this subject and hope to be one of the driving forces to improve facilities that the whole Castlemilk community can benefit from. We will post any further news as it develops over the coming months.

Windlaw SSML Mid Season Review

As we reach the midpoint of the season and stop for the christmas period, let's look back at the first half of the season and hopefully get some insight into how the season will unfold.

After a poor pre season with a bare minimal squad, due to the departure of Macky and Benny to the afternoon team and Shug Neeson and Chris Kerr who had decided to move on, it was a transitional period for Windlaw, and expectations were low. However, the competitive season was upon us, and It all started against Airdrie at barlia. After 90 minutes, the teams couldn't be separated after a 2-2 was played out on the first league game of the season. It was a much better showing than anything in pre season and optimism reigned again. The defence of the League cup started well too, with 4-2 and 3-0 wins over Skye Wanderers and Bengal Lancers respectively. August had saw us do well and we took maximum points from Clydebank Thistle and Forest, but were brought back down to earth with a thumping 3-0 defeat to St Mary's in the League Cup. The biggest game of the season followed in September, and a patched up Windlaw side managed a 2-2 draw against Blochairn after Colin Carmichael slid in to secure a late point for the visitors and deal Star's title defence a blow. A run of 5 consecutive league wins followed when Hogganfield (twice), Greenhills Dynamo, Clydebank Utd and Shawbridge all lost to us. Confidence was high and there was a belief that the title was a possibility after getting to December undefeated. Sandwiched in the middle of this run was a home Scottish Cup tie against former quarter finalists Oban Saints. It was a classic cup tie at the maggies, but defensive mistakes and failure to take the chances presented saw Windlaw crash out despite a brave effort against one of the competition dark horses.

December came and so did our first league defeat. A notoriously difficult trip to Tynecastle saw John Lunny red carded after 20 minutes and Windlaw crash to a 2-1 defeat. We did bounce back the following week however, with a comprehensive 5-2 hammering of Greenbank Utd at barlia, in what was our last fixture of the year. We finish the year with an impressive record of played 12, won 9, drew 2 and lost only 1. A big achievement is gettign through "black October" unscathed, a period when Windlaw usually self destruct.

So what lies ahead in the second half of the season? January's performances last season was where Windlaw dropped out of the title race after some disappointing results, so it's important we continue the momentum from this year into next. We face some very hard away games to Greenhills Dynamo, Airdrie and Shawbridge, and equally some difficult home ties against Blochairn Star, Tynecastle and Clydebank Utd. There will be very little room for error because it's anyone from four who can claim the title just now. Blochairn Star are defending champions and an outstanding side and won't give up their league crown without a fight. Tynecastle have assembled their best squad in years, boasting of players like Jordan, Stevenson and Mooney and are genuine title contenders this season. AS Airdrie have had a superb start to the season, losing only once in the league so far. If they win their games in hand, they're right in the thick of it. Also enjoying a prolonged run in the West of Scotland Cup. And then there's Windlaw. Bounced back from a miserable pre-season and the loss of key players and put a good run together to stay in contention for the title.

So where will the title end up? That's the million dollar question! The team who holds their nerve the longest are in the hotseat, no doubt. Windlaw and Blochairn have been over this course before, so may have a slight advantage, but Tynecastle and Airdrie are hungry for the title too. The runners and riders are in position and heading for the finish line, all jockeying for the top spot. If I was a betting man, I'd put my money on a photo finish, that's how tight it is.
