Match Report

West of Scotland Cup:2nd Round
15th October 2005
Donald Dewar Sports Complex
Drumchapel Utd 'B' 3

Windlaw AFC 0

Star Man: Wullie Wilson had one of his best games in the Windlaw engine room and worked tirelessly alongside Martin Docherty. Other noteable performances came from Thornton and Tierney on his first start of the season.

Action Details

Windlaw start the game well and seem to unnerve their opponents by not lying down to allow them to dish out the type of beating they have been dishing out to their opposition in The West Of Scotland League all season. Clear cut chances were at a premium but Windlaw had plenty pressure from corners and throws but couldn't create a gilt edged chance. The midfield quartet were working hard and not allowing chances to Drumchapel's arrogant young forwards who were becoming as frustrated as the rest of the home side at their lack of cutting edge. On 40 minutes with the game on a knife-edge, came the game's pivotal moment. Windlaw striker McCaig, already on a booking for dissent was punched by the Drumchapel right back and understandably reacted angrily and received a second yellow and subsequent red card. The offending Drumchapel instigator amazingly received a yellow for his troubles. This was particularly harsh as McCaig was causing the home side many problems with his intelligent runs, movement and constant harassing. Windlaw held out comfortably though, until the interval.

Half Time: Drumchapel Utd 0 Windlaw 0

Drumchapel throw on another forward to capitalise on their amazing fortune. Soon after, Windlaw are dealt another crushing blow when Zanda Dougall who had been commanding at the back, suffered a nasty head wound that later required three stitches and had to go off to be replaced by Alan Nugent. This change resulted in Wullie Wilson having to fill in at centre-half. Just after the hour Drumchapel went in front when a slide-rule pass through to their forward springs the Windlaw off-side trap and the striker rounded the exposed Lunny before finishing. Windlaw's 10 men refuse to buckle but the heavy surface and extra workloads take their toll as the home side begin to find more space to work in. With 20 minutes left, the killer second arrived when Chris Kerr is dispossessed just outside his own area and a brilliantly struck shot flies into Lunny's right hand corner. In the dying minutes, Drumchapel add a flattering third from a suspiciously offside position to rub salt into the visitor's wounds.

Full Time: Drumchapel Utd 3 Windlaw 0

Summing Up -If ever a sending off changed a game, then this was it. Windlaw were slightly ahead on first half pressure and had the West Of Scotland League side rattled and worried. 11 v 11, Windlaw would probably have edged this game but also having only 13 available and fit players, the options were limited. Another lesson must be learned that Windlaw need to be as calculating and cute as some of their opponents to win this type of match.
