Star Man: John Lunny - The big keeper just edged out Benny Carey. Flawless handling under pressure, he produced an amazing stop from a one-on-one situation late in the game that ultimately won his team the game.
Action Details
Mark Dyer's Shawbridge race to a 2-0 lead in 20 minutes with two superb finishes and threaten to run riot with a ragged looking Windlaw side. Windlaw then reshape to a four man defence to try to deal with the two menacing Shawbridge forwards. The move pays dividends and the Shawbridge keeper makes two fine saves before Windlaw get one back. McInally's hopeful punt back in from a cleared corner is bizarrely skewed over his own keeper's head by a Shawbridge defender's head. Amazingly, on the stroke of half-time, the same defender miscued an Eck McCaig cross-cum shot over his own line to complete a superb Windlaw comeback and give them parity at the break.
A tense start to the second half with both teams probing but Windlaw take the lead from the penalty spot. Shawbridge's tall centre half is adjudged to have handled Chris Kerr's pass into the penalty area and Kevin McCann steps up to fire into the keeper's left hand corner. Windlaw then looked to have wrapped it up when Alan Nugent's superb foray and cross from the right wing eludes both the keeper and Benny Carey but finds the galloping John McCabe who gleefully taps home from a couple of yards out. Shawbridge are then reduced to 10 after losing a man to a second bookable offence but refuse to buckle and pull one back from a headed finish with 5 minutes to go to set up a fantastic finish. Windlaw's defence just withstands a late onslaught to hold on for three precious league points.
Verdict: Another ‘battle royale' between these two evenly matched sides. Shawbridge will feel aggrieved as Windlaw's desire not to lie down and die at 2-0 down, just gave them the edge in another tense finish. A fantastic victory.
