Pathetic, Awful, Dismal, Dreadful, Abysmal, Shocking !!
You could use any one of those words to describe the Windlaw performance on Saturday and even then we would be getting off lightly. The performance was poor, the attitude was terrible and the indiscipline was pathetic. All that mixed in with an excuse for a football pitch which would see football stopped and a very poor refereeing performance made for a really bad day at the office for Windlaw. Two crucial points dropped, but nothing more than we deserved to be perfectly honest.
Believe it or not, for a spell in the game Windlaw looked comfortable and in control, stringing together some good passing combinations, before failing in front of goal.
We took the lead with a freak goal after just 10 minutes. Gary Wilson played a long ball into the box, but that dodgy pitch reared its head and the ball bounced right over the keeper and into the net. Another 45 yard fluke from Wilson, its becoming a bit of a habit.
Windlaw should have doubled their lead shortly after when a good move saw Kevin McCann faced with a one on one with the Scotsman goalkeeper. However McCann charged towards goal, but he made a mess of his shot and struck it straight at the keeper. A golden opportunity missed.
The remainder of the first half was scrappy with the pitch doing both teams no favours, and 1-0 Windlaw was the half-time score.
The second half was worse than the first, although hard to believe I know. Scotsman came back into the match more and more and deservedly equalised with the second freak goal of the game. With no other option available, John McCabe played the ball back to keeper John Lunny. As the big goalie lined up to clear the ball, it took an almighty bobble, Lunny missed it altogether and the ball rolled into the net for 1-1. It was just one of those freak goals that can happen to anybody. Lets just hope nobody was filming the game.
That goal seemed to dent Windlaw's already fragile confidence and to be honest we never really recovered from it. There was a couple of half chances here and there but nothing too threatening to the Scotsman goalkeeper.
Kevin McCann did have the ball in the net, when he volleyed from the corner of the penalty area, but the referee wrongly chalked it off, citing offside as the reason.
Scotsman Bar were unlucky not to go ahead when a 25 yard screamer came back off the face of the bar, much to the relief of Windlaw.
As the game drew to a close, both teams desperately tried to win all 3 points, but it wasn't to be and a draw was a fair result.
Thats two games against the Scotsman this season and they've probably been two of the hardest games we've played all season. I think its fair to say their current league position is not a fair reflection on their ability as a team. They thoroughly deserved their point, but without being arrogant, its a game Windlaw should have won. Not because we have the right to, but because we are challenging for a league and every game is a must win, every game should be treated as a cup final. The attitude and mentality must be spot on in every game, but sadly that wasn't the case on Saturday. Too many players just thought they simply had to turn up and win, well Im sorry but thats not good enough. We have to give our opponents respect and earn our victories. Not one single player came out of that match with passmarks, everyone could have done better. Let's put it down as a bad day at the office and move on from it. Let's show the right attitude again, starting with this Saturday's home match against Tynecastle. Let's get back to doing what we do best, play football and win matches and hopefully at the end of the season we'll have some silverware to show for our efforts.
Come on boys, let's get back on that title bandwagon again !!!
