Windlaw's ‘home' game against Scotsman Bar was our first ever fixture against the Bridgeton side since their successful introduction to the Strathclyde Saturday Morning League. The game at the astrograss at Nethercraigs was almost postponed as a shocking mix up by the referee's supervisor meant that no official was appointed for the game and with both teams on the pitch at 8pm, it was 8.40pm before a hastily appointed ref made it on to the park.
Windlaw lined up with only one change to Saturday's starting line up with the suspended Shug Neeson replacing the injured Benny Carey.
The delay certainly affected Windlaw who were shocking in the first half and were perhaps fortunate to go in level at the break. Scotsman looked more threatening and should have gone ahead when a neat move down the left resulted in a great back post cross that their forward should have buried but blasted over. At the other end Darren Campbell missed an even better chance when he latched onto a poor passback across the Scotsman goal but miskicked at the vital moment and sclaffed it wide.
Windlaw took the lead about 15 minutes into the second half, when John McCabe's delightful chip over the onrushing Scotsman Bar defence found Shug Neeson's perfectly timed run to beat the offside trap. Neeson coolly lofted over the onrushing keeper into the empty net for perhaps an unjustified lead. Windlaw's joy was short lived when Scotsman got a sensational equaliser minutes later. McInally's poor clearance was worked out to their right midfielder fully 25 yards out at an acute angle. No one shut him down and he unleashed a magnificent right foot shot past Lunny's dive. The big keeper got a hand to it but the shot was unstoppable.
With about 15 minutes left Windlaw regained the lead from a corner. Shug Neeson's header was parried back to him by the keeper and from 6 yards out, the big man made no mistake with the follow up. Scotsman pressed for an equaliser and a third goal was needed to kill the game. With 5 minutes remaining Kevin McCann was fouled in the box by the Scotsman's impressive centre half. McCann dusted himself down and did his usual immaculate job with the spot kick. In the dying seconds the impressive John McCabe got his just rewards for an excellent second half performance when he latched on to a beautiful through ball from substitute Taylor to put a very flattering 4-1 complexion on the scoreline.
Windlaw really struggled with a poor performance against a Scotsman Bar side whose lively performance belies their league position. Too many players had an off night and a huge improvement will be needed for the trip to Greenhills on Saturday to play the league's only unbeaten side. Must do better. All credit to Scotsman Bar who will certainly not be relegated on form like this.
