Origins OF Windlaw AFC

Windlaw AFC, In the Beginning ............

Danny DooleyWindlaw AFC were founded in 1991 and was the brainchild of Danny Dooley, who along with a group of mates from the Stravannan area in Castlemilk, decided to get a football team together. The original plan, which never came to fruition, was to get some sponsorship from Scottish Homes who were building some houses in the area at the time to get them started.

The original strips from memory were funded by Eddie Fitzpatrick's company (Brother of the legendary John Fitzpatrick) and the team played their first season in another Saturday morning league prior to joining the Strathclyde Civil Service League as our present league was known then.

The team was basically a street team at that point and included guys such as Danny Dooley, Paul Dooley, Paul Waters (aka Wabbs), John Fitzpatrick, Pat McLaughlin, Rab Smith, Big Sean (surname unknown), Joe Cairney and a young John McEnroe lookalike going by the name of Shug Neeson.

Home parks at that time would have been Carmunnock and the old Glenwood red ash pitch behind Castlemilk swimming pool, with changing rooms located at the nearby Labour Club.

Success was limited at that time and the football was probably second best to a group of mates getting together to do something they all enjoyed, getting hammered, sometimes literally!

Factually, there may be some inaccuracies in all of this, we had hoped for Brother Danny Dooley to write this page and hopefully in the future, Danny will take the forum to write his own account of how it all began.

We encourage all past players to get in touch and let us know of any past Windlaw memories or experiences they have had.

Do you think that you should be classified as a Windlaw legend?

Please let us know.

That is what this website of our great club is all about. It is important though, to many of our present and maybe younger players to understand a little of the club's origins. The trophy laden seasons of recent years should never be taken for granted. As present players, we have an important job to get the club to the highest possible position we can in amateur football, but in many ways our history is more interesting.

The standard of football may not have always been as good as the standard of illegal substances in the old Windlaw dressing room, but some of the patter and characters were superb.

As Neil Diamond famously sings............. ‘Where it begins'

The story continues….
