Windlaw had to make two enforced changes from the side that won at Glasgow University last Saturday with both Chris Carr and Tam Simpson injured, Zanda Dougall came into central defence with Wullie Wilson reverting to left-back. Calum Granger came into the central midfield to replace Simpson on a fine but cold day, the 3G surface was in great nick despite the overnight frost that had caused so many postponements elsewhere.
A nightmare start for the visitors as in the opening minutes their talented striker Derek Potter caught his studs while tracking a Kevin McCann run and collapsed in pain. Unfortunately he couldn’t continue and had to be helped off after a delay,we wish him well on his recovery. Windlaw then took control of the game and enjoyed some good possession. Muirend had an amazing escape when a Chris Hepburn free-kick was spilled by keeper McAulay but neither Greg Johnstone or Eck McCaig following in could force it over the line. Windlaw were the dominant team and knocked it about well at times but they were frustrated until 29 minutes before taking the lead. A low inswinging corner from Chris Hepburn found Greg Johnstone amazingly unmarked just yards out and he stooped to bullet home a diving header into the corner of the net. On the 39th minute the lead was doubled after Calum Granger got possession and drove at the heart of the visitors defence at the edge of their box. He ran past a defender and cut the ball back for Danny McKenna who hammered it high into the net with the keeper beaten. Just before the break, John Lunny was forced into a fine save as he had to claw out a mishit shot from right on his goalline while diving the wrong way. The danger was scrambled clear as Michael Gilmour tried to force it home keeping the two goal advantage intact at the break.
Half Time: Windlaw AFC 2 - 0 Muirend
Muirend started the second half the stronger looking for the goal that would get them back in the game. They pinned Windlaw back a bit more but weren’t creating anything clear cut. John Lunny did well to save from a dangerous ball across his goal with Kevin McCann completing the clearance. The next goal would be vital and eventually the hosts got it from a Muirend attack. As the ball was cleared to the halfway line, Kevin McCann sprinted from defence and charged down the attempt to put it back into the Windlaw half. The ball fell nicely for him and all of a sudden it was him and Greg Johnstone against one Muirend defender. He ran towards the box and released the ball just in time to keep Johnstone onside and when the ball arrived the striker right-footed his shot low past McAulay at his right-hand post to ensure the points were staying in Castlemilk. This allowed Windlaw to relax a bit and more goals followed. Johnstone then set up Eck McCaig for a close range tap-in, then Liam McGeachy on for Danny McKenna struck from close range after a high McInally cross caused havoc in the Muirend box. Skipper McCaig added his own second and Windlaw’s sixth late on when he converted McInally’s cross into the net from close range again to complete a decent day’s work.
Full Time: Windlaw AFC 6 - 0 Muirend
Verdict: Windlaw Manager Billy Hepburn said of the victory ‘It was a good result but we’re not up to speed yet after the long lay off." Next Saturday sees the team travel to Lochwinnoch to take on Calderglen in what promises to be a very tough game.

Windlaw Star Man: Some good performances again with Zanda Dougall playing well on his return but the award goes to Calum Granger in midfield for a fine day’s work. |
