A windy Barlia marked the start of the new season and Billy Hepburn’s reign at the Windlaw helm. Of the new signings only Greg Johnstone started the game while the other two Mick Devaney and Chris Carr were on a strong bench which also included Calum Granger and the returning Colin Sinclair and Ian Baird.
Strangely Windlaw made a nervy start, some passing was wayward control poor and indecisiveness crept in as a result. Gradually though the chances began to flow and eventually Danny McKenna made the breakthrough after Thomas Taylor’s brilliant reverse dinked pass put him in on goal and he lofted the ball over the keeper who came to meet it to get the season’s scoresheet started. This settled Windlaw a little but they were still overplaying at the back at times and Moorpark were still in it. A fine second followed though when McKenna collected McInally’s high clearance in the Moorpark half. He held off the defender and slipped in Taylor who had made a fine supporting run into the box.He clipped the ball across the keeper and the gaping goal for Greg Johnstone to get his first competitive goal for the club. A third followed from Eck McCaig as he seized on a half cleared shot to sidefoot an amazing shot past the keeper who was caught napping at the other post. Just before half-time,the skipper got his second when Taylor broke the offside trap to put him through on goal and he rifled high into the net to put the outcome beyond doubt.
Half Time: Windlaw AFC 4 - 0 Moorpark
A sloppy start to the second half allowed Moorpark back in and on 49 minutes they got one back. John Lunny tried to tip a wind-assisted shot over the bar but could only get it onto the underside and the forward following up had the easiest of tasks to nod into the net with Lunny on the ground. Windlaw recovered though and the four goal lead was restored when Greg Johnstone steered a good cross from the left home for his second and Windlaw’s fifth goal. His first Windlaw hat-trick was completed when he forced home a fine Danny McKenna cross from the left wing. There were run-outs for Mick Devaney,Chris Carr and Ian Baird as Windlaw continued to dominate. Loads of other chances were squandered, too many to record and the men from Renfrew looked relieved to hear the final whistle.
Full Time: Windlaw AFC 6 - 1 Moorpark
Verdict: A reasonable performance after a nervy start for some reason. Plenty of chances were created and on another day, more goals would have been scored but all the new faces are settling well into Billy Hepburns side and he’ll be quite pleased with the day’s work although there is room for improvement.

Windlaw Star Man: A tough one with a few good performances. Thomas Taylor and Liam McGeachy showed up well, Danny McKenna involved in most good things including the goals and of course Greg Johnstone got his first competitive hat-trick for the club but Eck McCaig probably just edged it with two goals and bags of energy from the right. |
