Three changes for Windlaw from last week’s late win over Rannoch. Craig Thomas started at right back in place of the injured Paul McInally, Wullie Wilson came back into central defence to replace Calum Granger and Tam Simpson returned from suspension to go into the central midfield replacing Ian Baird. There was a significant face on the bench with Chris Kerr in as a trialist, set to rejoin the club after a spell with first division Bannerman this season. For last season’s Player Of The Year, it was destined to be ill-fated sadly. The weather was superb for this top of the table clash with only a point seperating both sides at the top with the Uni three games more played.
Windlaw made a dream start and went ahead inside four minutes. Lunny’s long clearance towards Danny McKenna saw him hold off the defender well and the bouncing ball was seized upon by Liam McGeachy who made up the ground well to get inside left back Smith and bound into the box with only Mackay to beat. He steadied himself and shot across the keeper and into the net. The Uni looked stunned and Windlaw looked the better side in the opening 20 minutes and looked set to take the game by the scruff of the neck. The Uni though had genuine pace on their right wing and even Chris Carr was struggling to cope at times with the winger’s acceleration. The winger created the equaliser on 22 minutes when he latched onto an angled ball inside Carr to set up the forward for an easy finish from close range. This unsettled the home side and for a while the visitors were in the ascendancy. Windlaw tried to counter this with Liam McGeachy and Chris Hepburn switching wings. This almost paid dividends as Hepburn had two very near things with one close range effort blocked and one effort a few yards over the bar. As the break loomed, Windlaw were enjoying a better spell but crucially a minute from the break, the Uni went ahead after a defensive mistake was pounced on and the forward lobbed Lunny who was left exposed, it was a big moment in the game.
Half Time: Windlaw AFC 1 - 2 Glasgow Uni
Needing an instant lift in the second period, Windlaw got the ultimate kick in the teeth and lost a goal only two minutes in. A high ball into the box caused confusion between Lunny and the defenders and the Uni’s tall forward, enjoying a field day, rose in between them to glance a header into the unguarded net. Effectively that was game over. Windlaw never recovered or looked like doing so. The Uni got stronger and looked fitter and the result was a formality. Lunny made a few saves to keep the score at three while Zanda Dougall replaced the injured Craig Thomas and Chris Kerr then repaced Eck McCaig in midfield. A fourth goal was added with five minutes remaining when Windlaw’s attempt to push up backfired and the forward was left with a clean run in on goal and he blasted past Lunny. An awful day then became a disastrous one as Chris Kerr lunged to clear a ball in his own half and there were immediate screams of anguish from him. Those around quickly knew how serious the injury was and help was called for with a couple of the Uni boys more qualified to help assist while an ambulance was called. With the game only having a minute left, proceedings were ended while the important task of getting help to the stricken player took place.
Full Time: Windlaw AFC 1 - 4 Glasgow Uni
Verdict: The game and result became insignificant. The Uni were highly deserving winners in this and credit to them. We also thank their people who aided and assisted Chris while we waited on the paramedics arriving, their help was most appreciated. The day was all about the injury to Chris. No footballer at any level ever thinks their day will end with them in hospital and life turned upside down a bit. Chris has always been among the most committed of players on the field and he has suffered serious injury before. His working life and general health are what everyone should be concerned about after this game.
