The squad was cut down to the absolute bones for this clash with McKenna, Carr and Devaney all on holiday plus Zanda Dougall and Tam Simpson working which meant only three subs could be named with two of the management team Benny Carey and Colin Carmichael among them. Again a strong wind blew down the pitch which the visitors with 30 goals scored in three games would have behind them.

After a decent start Windlaw’s defensive nightmare began and EK took the lead on 12 minutes. Worse was to follow when John Lunny lost the flight of a free-kick in the sun and the ball sailed high into the net. Another comedy moment ensued when McInally scored a howler of an own goal when he somehow diverted a cross into the area high past John Lunny when attempting to clear after hesitating too long. Two minutes later Greg Johnstone got one back with a cracker after Taylor laid off to him and he smashed home brilliantly from 20 yards.

Half Time: Windlaw AFC 1 -3 East Kilbride Utd

At 3-1 down and the wind now behind them Windlaw needed the next goal but more defensive frailty saw the visitors get it and the victory was now ensured for EK with Windlaw dispirited. Three more goals were added as Windlaw’s attempts to play an offside trap were beaten by EK’s potent front three. Late on, Chris Hepburn’s inswinging corner found the net for a consolation.

Full Time: Windlaw AFC 2-7 East Kilbride Utd

Verdict: A hammering from a decent side. Five of the goals though came from defensive individual errors and to compete we needed a good defensive performance. After five games without a clean sheet, such a defensive disaster was perhaps in the post.

On the plus side we cut EK open on many occasions and could have scored four or five ourselves, sorting the defensive side out may hold the key to the season as the goals look as if they will flow. Without doubt, this will be a result which will delight the detractors and that alone should be motivation enough for the remainder of the season.
