A baking hot Barlia hosted the second meeting of the sides this season. Windlaw made four changes from the League Cup defeat to East Kilbride United with Greg Johnstone, Calum Granger, Kevin McCann and Colin Sinclair being replaced by Mick Devaney, Zanda Dougall, Tam Simpson and Danny McKenna.
Windlaw made a good start and went ahead on eight minutes when a short corner by Chris Hepburn was fired across goal and Danny McKenna’s backpost downward header beat Isaksen for the opener and his sixth goal of the season. Calderglen kept going though and always threatened. One attack saw John Lunny tip a shot onto his left hand post before Devaney headed clear then the big keeper produced an amazing double save from close range to keep his side ahead.
On 31 minutes, Windlaw went two up when another Chris Hepburn corner swung deep to the backpost and Eck McCaig drifted in to bundle home with his mid-drift from close range.
Half Time: Windlaw AFC 2 - 0 Calderglen
Calderglen started the second half well with Windlaw looking lethargic in the sun. Again they almost got one back but the shot from close range just sneaked past Lunny’s right hand post. Eventually, Windlaw regained their composure and started creating chances again with Chris Hepburn a threat from the right wing. Calderglen again struck a post though with a low 20 yard shot that struck the base.
Near the end with both teams tiring, Liam McGeachy had a good penalty claim denied as Windlaw tried to get that elusive third goal that just wouldn’t come keeping the visitors always in it until they ran out of time.
Full Time: Windlaw AFC 2-0 Calderglen
Verdict: Never a vintage performance but Windlaw did enough to take all three points. Calderglen congested the midfield and struck the woodwork three times so they were never out of the game. A special word of praise also goes to referee Peter McCool for an outstanding performance laced with good common sense.

Windlaw Star Man: Zanda Dougall had a good performance in central defence but his defensive partner Mick Devaney marked his first Windlaw start with a commanding performance that takes the award. |
