A massive five changes from Saturday’s defeat to Drumchapel with Lunny, Kerr, Zanda Dougall, Eck McCaig and Benny Carey all out for various reasons. Kevin McCann took over between the sticks and in also came Calum Granger, Bruce Tierney, Simon Burns and Paul Humphreys. There was some concern pre-match as the heavy rain that had fell wasn’t draining properly and some surface water was present on the new surface but referee Innes started in anycase to see how things went. The wind blowing down one end was horrendous and was to have a big influence on the game.
Windlaw began kicking against the wind and almost immediately were penned in despite Kevin McCann getting good power into his kicks. They simply couldn’t get out and Third Lanark were pressing with Mick Devaney prominent in midfield. Eventually the breakthrough came when a ball was played inside Calum Granger and their forward ran on to dink a finish over McCann’s dive which took an age to go in despite Tam Simpson’s best efforts. Windlaw recovered slightly and Paul Humphreys failed to connect with a close range chance soon after. He was then booked after Thirds keeper Black appeared to foul him and a penalty looked more likely. Thirds got a second on 37 minutes when a long throw was only half-punched away by McCann and the ball fell nicely for the forward to fire home from only 6 yards among defensive confusion.
Half Time: Windlaw AFC 0 - 2 Third Lanark
The game had a pre-season feel about it and Windlaw made three half-time changes to add to this. Despite being against the wind, Thirds created a couple of early second-half chances before the game began to turn on 63 minutes. Wullie Wilson hoisted a free-kick deep into Thirds box from his own half but keeper Gary Black had the misfortune to fumble it into his own net. Windlaw got a slight lift and on 72 minutes Zanda Dougall’s powerful looping header from a corner also found the back of the net. The winner came on 82 minutes when Duncan McGregor stood up a fine cross for Danny McKenna to header against Black from close range then follow up with a simple finish. Thirds had a man sent off late on and continued to press but Windlaw held on for their first win at the refurbished Barlia
Full Time: Windlaw AFC 3 - 2 Third Lanark
Summing-Up: A game totally ruined by a fierce wind as the change in scoreline suggested. Another nervous and untidy performance from Windlaw but a win is a win during these difficult days. |
