Good weather greeted Windlaw’s belated start to the season on a pitch which offered poor goalmouth areas. Windlaw were missing several key personnel but had a good squad of 15 players still available. A slightly unusual 4-2-3-1 formation was used with Benny Carey up front on his own. A good Robslee side from Division 1 were always going to be formidable opponents.
The first half was a turgid affair and both defences were on top. Neither keeper had any serious saves to make really with Robslee’s Jassal narrowly lobbing over Lunny’s bar. Late in the half Zanda Dougall took a heavy knock on his right arm in a touchline challenge and he was to be replaced at half-time by Bruce Tierney.
Half Time: Windlaw 0 Robslee 0
The second half was again pretty even but Windlaw resorted to route one too often. Just after the hour the visitors took the lead when a strong run down the left wing saw a byeline cutback catch out the Windlaw defence and Steele slightly miscued a close range finish past the helpless John Lunny. The goal deflated Windlaw and on 71 minutes Robslee went two up when Jassal’s brilliant first touch saw him break free of the Windlaw defence and prod a finish just past Lunny. Eck McCaig then missed a good chance when he failed to connect with a close range shooting opportunity. Robslee’s third came after good build up play down their right resulted in Jassal again being set up inside the box and he finished well. To their credit, Windlaw never gave up and Eck McCaig latched onto a bizarre 60 yard pass back from a Robslee player to bravely challenge the keeper in the race to the ball and lob a finish high into the net. Young Stuart Lunny then fired narrowly over but Windlaw’s efforts were in vein as Robslee deservedly held on to take the tie.
Full Time: Windlaw 1 Robslee 3
Summing-Up: Good effort but little guile from Windlaw and the better side definitely won. Robslee were solid throughout and the first goal was going to be vital. They adjusted well to the battle and we wish them well. Much work lies ahead for the Windlaw squad.
Star Man- Eck McCaig showed a great example as always and his goal summed up this excellent atitude.
