Again quite a few changes for a far stronger Windlaw squad who made the short trip to Muirend for this vital league clash. Simon Burns again started at right-back with Zanda Dougall replacing Shug Neeson and Paul McInally on the bench. Duncan McGregor came back in to replace Paul Humphreys and Chris Kerr came into midfield to replace Allan Dougall. Conditions were pretty good on a surface and venue that never really disappoints.
The home side had probably the better of a fairly mundane start and John Lunny made two excellent early saves to keep the scoreline blank. Windlaw were trying to get it down and play but a fairly congested midfield area made it difficult and the home side were big and strong at most times. Windlaw took a rather surprising lead on 21 minutes after fine work on the left wing by Danny McKenna who fired a speculative cross-cum shot from an amazing angle which flew over the stunned keeper’s head and into the net. Kevin McCann then limped off with an ankle knock to be replaced by McInally while Colin Carmichael filled in at left-back.
The home side got an equaliser on 30 minutes from a free-kick 22 yards out. The wall seemed to expose too much of the side it was to protect and the kick flew round it with John Lunny unable to keep it out with a despairing effort on the line. The remainder of the half was pretty even in terms of possession with few real chances.
Half Time: Orchard Park Mount B 1 - 1 Windlaw AFC
Windlaw seized the initiative from early in the second half. Simon Burns was causing a few problems down the right flank with his eagerness to get forward and gradually the chances began to flow. The game though was beginning to get seriously affected by a bizarre performance from referee Murray. He continually refused to blow up for blatant fouls or was awarding throw-ins the wrong way and both sides were suffering from this.
Paul Humphreys replaced Duncan McGregor and went up top with Danny McKenna going wide left. Windlaw though were beginning to win the battle and looked hungrier. Paul Humphreys got two good chances within a short time of coming on but squandered both then as Danny McKenna looked set to net with a chip over the onrushing keeper, his shot was deflected just wide.
The game exploded on 78 minutes when an Orchard Park player took exception to a Chris Kerr challenge on the touchline and threw his boot at him as he got up. Amazingly no red card was shown for this offence and this was merely a build up of frustration by both sides at the whistler’s performance. It was certainly not a dirty game. Orchard Park then broke up the park quickly from a Windlaw corner leaving McInally exposed one on one. He held up the forward though who could only slice his left foot shot a couple of feet past Lunny’s left hand post.
Despite their second half domination, Windlaw looked as if they’d be denied despite heavy pressure. On 83 minutes though, Paul Humphreys got reward for his persistance when he latched onto a through ball between defence and goalkeeper to stroke home the winner. A true striker’s goal from the former Bannerman striker. Windlaw held on and defended stoutly without any real alarms to secure the victory.
Full Time: Orchard Park Mount B 1 - 2 Windlaw AFC
Verdict: A much improved Windlaw showing than of late with more heart and guts than free flowing football but a win was essential and there was little doubt that Windlaw did deserve this over the piece. Both sides deserve credit for battling through some truly baffling decisions throughout this match. |
Windlaw Star Man: probably a team award would be the most appropriate this week as they stuck together well to secure a hard fought victory and fought for each other. |
