Two changes with Thomas Taylor and Zanda Dougall replacing Colin Carmichael and Danny McKenna. Windlaw opted for a 3-5-2 formation on a decent but very sloppy surface at the picturesque setting of Eaglesham village on a superb night for football. This was the first of a series of midweek games in the run-in and with the ball pressure perfect the match could get under way.
Both sides tried to attack early and from an OP free-kick into Windlaw’s penalty box, Lunny had to make a smartish save from a header in the opening stages. Minutes later Benny Carey missed a big chance to put Windlaw ahead when a through ball beat OP’s offside trap he was clean through however the keeper came out quickly and spread himself very well to beat away the effort. Simon Burns then fashioned another great chance when he foraged down the right wing before delivering a brilliant cross which Paul Humphrey’s lunge just couldn’t connect with. Zanda Dougall was then barged off the ball and as he challenged to get it back, he was booked. Minutes later Wullie Wilson injured his knee in a sliding challenge and lay on the ground awaiting treatment. The referee though refused him treatment and waved play on from a throw-in, incensing Windlaw’s players. In the subsequent passage of play, Zanda Dougall was adjudged to have fouled the OP forward 10 yards outside the penalty area and the red card was rushed out the pocket to dismiss the big stopper after only 22 minutes. Five minutes later, more misery for Windlaw when a well whipped in OP corner was met only 6 yards out and flew into the bottom corner of the net. Being a man down and a goal down, Windlaw were now right up against it but managed to prevent any further damage until the break.
Half Time: Windlaw 0 - 1 Orchard Park Mount B
Windlaw now kicking down the slope flew out the traps and almost immediately the bulk of the play was in the visitors half despite their numerical advantage. Wullie Wilson’s knee injury which didn’t merit treatment forced him to be replaced by Danny McKenna only minutes into the second half. A few corners were forced then from a free-kick, Chris Kerr’s header at the back post was just scrambled to safety. But it was merely a matter of time and on 59 minutes the equaliser came from a free-kick won 25 yards from the OP goal. As their keeper was trying to arrange his wall, Thomas Taylor’s quick thought of hitting it early caught him out and despite a despairing dive, the ball ended up in the net. Windlaw’s spirits were visibly lifted and you could sense only one outcome. The winner came on 69 minutes when a Taylor near post corner was bulleted home off the head of Eck McCaig to complete the comeback. The expected OP onslaught though never came as Windlaw never allowed it, they continued to boss the game with the opposition’s spirit seemingly crushed. Tam Simpson replaced Paul Humphreys to form a back four but it was Windlaw who continued to press and OP couldn’t get the ball forward. Eck McCaig slipped in Danny McKenna to beat the offside trap and he was clean through but the keeper did well to rush from his line and as McKenna tried to round him he was fairly tackled by the keeper and the chance was lost. Benny Carey’s excellent shift was over late on as he was replaced by Allan Dougall. Dougall’s late inswinging corner brought out another good parry by the OP keeper who had a very decent game but again the expected late attacks from the visitors never came and Windlaw finished the game looking far stronger.
Full Time: Windlaw 2 - 1 Orchard Park Mount B
Verdict: This team may have many detractors but you simply can’t fault them for attitude and commitment. This was a victory achieved against the odds and adversity after playing for so long with only 10 men. The second half was complete domination and Orchard Park simply couldn’t match Windlaw’s desire to win. The only travesty perhaps was that the margin wasn’t bigger with chances squandered to nail the game but you’d be harsh to pick a fault like that from this game. Two very hard games against Orchard Park recently have brought six hard earned points but they are undoubtedly a tough side to beat. We wish them well for the remainder of the season. |
Windlaw Star Man: Two outstanding performers. Bruce Tierney barely put a foot wrong all night at the back but the award has to go to Benny Carey who gave the OP defence a torrid time all night winning headers and flick-ons. His work-rate was excellent too and he gave his all for the cause. |
