A massive five changes for Windlaw’s third game at their new Barlia home in only 8 days. After Wednesday’s hammering from St Pats in came Bruce Tierney, Calum Granger, Kevin McCann, Danny McKenna and Liam McGeachy to replace Simon Burns, Wullie Wilson, Benny Carey and Thomas Taylor who were all on the bench. Zanda Dougall started his three match ban. With United second top of Division One and Windlaw in freefall this should have been a formality for the visitors on a gloriously sunny afternoon.

Having conceded 13 goals in their previous two games, Windlaw’s new look defence had a slightly nervy look early on, perhaps understandably. They did however manage to muddle through and the expected early onslaught from the first division side never really came, although John Lunny did have one superb save in the first half low down at his right hand post. Windlaw were wasteful in possession though at times and didn’t hold the ball well enough although young Liam McGeachy was showing up well on his first Windlaw start on the right hand side.

Half Time: Windlaw AFC 1 - 1 East Kilbride Utd

Wullie Wilson replaced Calum Granger just minutes into the second half. Windlaw improved more second half and got what appeared to be a vital opener on 63 minutes. A long throw found the head of Danny McKenna who bravely held off the challenge of United keeper Sime and his looping header bounced into the net. It gave the home side something to hold onto and the visitors plenty to think about. United began to attack more but Windlaw were resolute in defence although there were moments of panic at times. Again Windlaw failed to keep the ball well enough and this was bringing United back on top of them. Ref Niall Walker was having a good game but the offside decisions were becoming vital and this was to prove Windlaw’s downfall. As they neared the finishing line, they faltered and 5 minutes from time United equalised after a through ball caught their striker clearly in an offside position. The striker stayed composed and despite Lunny’s best efforts he netted. Windlaw were distraught and the searing heat was now taking its toll as extra-time loomed large. There was one last sting in this game though as United got a winner on 90 minutes. A cross to the back-post was squared across goal and the ball was smashed high into the net from 7 yards to break Windlaw and inflict their third Barlia defeat in only eight days.

Full Time: Windlaw AFC 1 - 2 East Kilbride Utd

Verdict: A pretty close game which the visitors did just enough to edge over the piece. They probably had more possession and pressure and used the ball better when they had it. Windlaw were at least far more resiliant than their last two displays and this showing at least offers some hope for the remaining games.

Windlaw Star Man:Danny McKenna led the line superbly on his comeback after holiday and got the goal he deserved.
A constant menace to United’s defence.
