A reflective night at the end of a roller-coaster season and Windlaw had two of their outstanding servants of the past decade playing their final games for the club as Bruce Tierney and Benny Carey call time on their playing days. Bruce captained the side for the night as Windlaw could only muster 13 bodies for this game and one of the subs was manager Martin Kerr. There were three changes from the Alba game with Zanda Dougall, Thomas Taylor and Paul Humphreys replacing Liam McGeachy, Allan Dougall and Duncan McGregor. The pitch was in good condition although a little heavy and was a good size on a fine night for football.
Windlaw settled immediately and were zipping the ball around with confidence in this ‘no-pressure’ atmosphere. A good move saw Danny McKenna played in on goal and he calmly side-footed past Barratt to give the visitors the lead. Windlaw continued to dominate with most play down the left but Zanda Dougall was also showing up well in an unfamiliar right-back berth. The second-goal came courtesy of a great break when Benny Carey played a delightful pass that set Paul Humphreys free down the right wing. His pace took him away from the defender and as he homed in on goal, he flighted a lovely shot high into the net. Eck McCaig added a third before half-time as he timed his run from midfield well and he finished smartly from inside the box. Crosslands were making very little impact on a well organised Windlaw defence and the healthy lead was well justified.
Half Time: Crosslands 0 - 3 Windlaw
Crosslands tried to hit back immediately and John Lunny was forced into a fine full length save at his right hand post in the opening minutes. They then had a better spell and forced some corners and pressure. Crosslands then got a penalty when Thomas Taylor was harshly adjudged to have fouled a Crosslands player after he got his shot away. Craig Gilfillan stepped up but crashed his spot-kick off the face of the bar and the rebound was scrambled clear. This was only to delay Crosslands goal though when an inswinging corner was nodded in by Easton from close range. Again, the next goal would be vital and Windlaw managed to get it after a fine move down the left resulted in Thomas Taylor playing an inch perfect pass between the last defender and goalkeeper for Paul Humphreys to latch onto and he sidestepped the keeper’s dive and slotted home. It was now game over and again Windlaw relaxed and created chances again. The hope was for Benny to finish his Windlaw career with a goal his performance deserved and when a penalty was awarded for a foul on Humphreys the stage was set but the big man fired down the middle and Barratt beat the ball away. The final few minutes of the season saw Martin Kerr treat himself to a run-out in attack beside Benny but there was no further scoring as the two stars of the night were warmly congratulated by their team-mates for superb contributions over a long number of years. They will not be easily replaced.
Full Time: Crosslands 1 - 4 Windlaw
Verdict: The night was all about getting a win and a performance for Brucie and Benny and thankfully, the team finally managed both. |
