No Case For The Defence
Three changes from last week with Zanda Dougall replacing Colin Sinclair in defence, James Fitzpatrick replacing Allan Dougall in midfield and Duncan McGregor was preferred in attack to Benny Carey. Ex Bannerman forward Paul Humphreys was on the bench as a trialist. The pitch was in decent nick although a bit bare in patches and the cold winter sunshine was as good as you could ask for on a January afternoon.
Windlaw began like a rabbit caught in a car’s headlights and should have went behind in only 3 minutes. Cambuslang broke down their right hand side and their forward rounded Lunny but amazingly rolled his shot past the open goal. The opener came two minutes later though from an almost identical move and this time Lunny was adjudged to have brought down the forward in the box. The penalty was put into Lunny’s left hand corner with the big keeper guessing the wrong way.
Cambuslang looked as if they could score at will with almost every attack and in 20 minutes they doubled their lead in controversial circumstances. From a throw-in down their left, Cambuslang broke away but their winger overran the ball and it had gone over the touchline for a throw but the ref waved play on and the cross into the box was excellently swept home as the Windlaw defence stood static looking for the throw to be awarded. Ref McCool later admitted he’d made a mistake but he wasn’t the only one culpable by this point.
Windlaw desperately tried to get back into the game and the Cambuslang goal led a charmed life for the remainder of the half. A good Danny McKenna run played in Duncan McGregor who had stayed onside and was clean through but he got caught between shooting and crossing and his effort went wide. There were other numerous close calls. James Fitzpatrick crashed a long range shot off the bar and umpteen crosses and long throws were somehow scrambled away as the Cambuslang defence struggled aerially. However they preserved their lead until the break.
Half Time: Cambuslang 2 - 0 Windlaw
Benny Carey replaced Duncan McGregor at the break. The second half was fairly even and the next goal was vital. Windlaw got it when Eck McCaig smashed home from close range on 70 minutes after a goalmouth scramble. However the comeback was short-lived as just two minutes later Cambuslang substitute Michael Quinn found far too much room in the Windlaw box and tucked his shot neatly past Lunny to restore the two goal advantage.
The visitors refused to give up though and on 83 minutes Chris Kerr again offered some hope when he stabbed past Adams from only two yards out. Windlaw by this point had thrown caution to the wind and Paul Humphreys had replaced Tierney with the team adopting a 3-4-3 formation. James Fitzpatrick blasted a free-kick over late on from a decent position.
With two minutes remaining though came the nail in the coffin when a huge punt deep into the Windlaw half wasn’t dealt with at all and the Cambuslang forward nicked in behind Zanda Dougall and rounded John Lunny before tapping home the decisive goal.
Verdict: A very poor defensive display meant that Windlaw were chasing the game from almost the first minute and the damage was effectively done inside 20 minutes. |
Windlaw Star Man: Eck McCaig by a country mile. The skipper’s attitude and commitment was superb and he didn’t deserve to be on the losing side. Sadly, hardly one of his team mates came close to matching his form. |
