Two changes from Wednesday as Kevin McCann and Liam McGeachy replaced Colin Carmichael and the injured Tam Simpson. Zanda Dougall was back on the bench after serving his three match ban. The pitch was in an awful condition and although it was a good size, the dry sunny weather only served to make it more fiery in certain areas. There was a kit mix-up when both sides appeared in all black which Calderglen tried to recover by changing into blue shorts before kick-off.

From the off Windlaw took charge and were knocking the ball about reasonably well despite the conditions. In the opening minutes Benny Careys lunge from a McKenna cross just avoided contact with the ball for a certain goal. Windlaw were dominant though and Calderglen’s keeper then pulled off a stunning save tipping McKenna’s drive onto a post and away. It seemed only a matter of time for Windlaw to score then from a corner a penalty was awarded when Benny Carey was impeded and ref Santangelli was on hand to spot the infringement. Wullie Wilson stepped up but unusually could only fire his shot straight at the keeper for a regulation save. Worse was to follow when Calderglen scored against the run of play. McInally hooked a passback to Lunny wide of the goal but on his right side but his attempted clearance inside and up the pitch hit a Calderglen player at the edge of the box and he controlled it and smashed it into the mainly unguarded goal. Windlaw kept going though and were awarded a second spot-kick when Thomas Taylor was upended as he cut inside a Calderglen player in the box. He picked himself up and took the kick himself this time firing confidently into the bottom left corner of the keeper’s net.

Half Time: Calderglen 1 - 1 Windlaw

The second half followed a similar pattern with Windlaw the better side and Calderglen trying to play long over the top. The visitors needed the vital goal to hold onto. Eck McCaig was unlucky when Kevin McCann’s fine angled cross into the box picked him out but his header slipped wide. This merely delayed the skipper’s goal though and from a fine cross into the box he bravely headered into the keeper’s bottom right under a challenge. It was now up to Caldeglen to respond and they never gave in causing a few flutters in the Windlaw defence as long free-kicks reigned into the box but Windlaw survived and in the dying minutes sub Paul Humphreys played a great one two with Danny McKenna in Calderglen’s box but as he struck it the ball hit a bobble and flew over.

Full Time: Calderglen 1 - 2 Windlaw

Verdict:  Windlaw tried to play the football in this game on an awful pitch. It was definitely a well deserved win and could have been more emphatic at times. A far better attitude about the team and this helped get the breaks which have been elusive in the past few games. The home defeat to Calderglen will be seen as one of the most damaging of the season.

Windlaw Star Man: Thomas Taylor bossed the game for the most part and took responsibility for dispatching the penalty.
