Three changes from Saturday’s last ditch cup defeat with Calum Granger, Paul Humphreys and Chris Kerr all unavailable and replaced by Simon Burns, Wullie Wilson and Benny Carey. The pitch was very poor although decent in size and the bobbles off it would be considerable.

It became clear early on that this would never be a classic and long balls and long throws etc were the order of the day. It was from a keeper’s punt that Ashvale opened the scoring and as the ball came out of the air, Simon Burns was adjudged to have fouled the Ashvale player 22 yards out. The free-kick was touched to the side and the shot seemed to go in too easily for Windlaw’s liking. Windlaw responded though and Eck McCaig’s fine ball over the top of Ashvale’s defence found Danny McKenna and he controlled it before firing home his tenth goal of the season. The parity didn’t last long though and Windlaw seemed to surrender possession inside the Ashvale half too easily and the ball was swept forward towards Ashvale’s gangly centre-forward who showed good strength and pace to hold off Bruce Tierney’s challenge before he slotted home from just inside the box. The goal deflated Windlaw and the break was welcomed.

Half Time: Ashvale Victoria 2 - 1 Windlaw

The second half was another untidy affair with referee Bell’s whistle punctuating the flow of the game constantly and the balls constantly having to be retrieved from open spaces all round the pitch. Danny McKenna missed Windlaw’s best chance to equalise after an excellent move saw Thomas Taylor roll the ball across goal to him he was unable to keep his shot down and blazed over. Wullie Wilson and Benny Carey had to be substituted after becoming a target for ref Bell and Ashvale had a late goal controversially ruled out for offside. Ashvale hung on though for a vital three points in their promotion push

Full Time: Ashvale Victoria 2 - 1 Windlaw

Verdict:  A dreadful game between two poor sides who struggled to pass the ball well. Windlaw had the chances to equalise but didn’t take them and mistakes again proved costly for both goals.

Windlaw Star Man: ProbablyKevin McCann did best in another game with few good performances.
