Third Lanark Athletic 1

Windlaw 2
Carey(2)

Team:
Lunny, Tierney, Thornton, McInally, Stuart, Larkin, McKenna(Mallon), Paton, Carey, Williamson(McGregor), Dougall(Wilson)

Windlaw made two changes from their last outing with Anthony Larkin and Allan Dougall replacing Craig Montgomery and the injured Barry Murtagh. Wullie Wilson was on the bench and hoping for an appearance to cap a speedy return from a serious Benny Careyinjury. Skipper Bruce Tierney was making his last appearance before going in for knee surgery on Wednesday. The pitch was bobbly and Third Lanark could boast a youthful side to pit against Windlaw’s experience.

Both sides tried to pass the ball well on a difficult surface and Allan Dougall came close early on with a decent long range effort. On 22 minutes, Windlaw got the opener when Anthony Larkin pinged a superb pass from the half-way line into Benny Carey’s path just inside the box. The on-fire striker’s first touch was superb and as he brought it down, he followed up with a thumping shot into the top corner for a brilliantly crafted goal. Third Lanark then applied some pressure to no avail and on 35 minutes they were further punished when McKenna’s deflected shot in the box cannoned off a defender and broke into Carey’s path. Again, he made no mistake, firing high into the net from 12 yards giving the keeper no chance. Windlaw held the lead until the break although their performance did not properly reflect the scoreline.

Half Time: Third Lanark Athletic 0 Windlaw 2

A welcome sight for Windlaw was the appearance of Wullie Wilson at half-time replacing Allan Dougall in central midfield and he enjoyed a good 45 minutes looking pretty sharp despite a lengthy lay-off. The half itself was fairly dull and chanceless with Third Lanark probably enjoying the better of the open play. Windlaw couldn’t force the third goal they needed to clinch the game but Third Lanark struck on 75 minutes to put the game back in the melting pot. A cross from their right wing was headed against Lunny’s post and the rebound was neatly smashed in, just inside Lunny’s left hand post. This galvanised the home side and they enjoyed some late pressure and a few good blocks and challenges from Windlaw’s defence were needed to hold onto the lead until the final whistle.

Full Time: Third Lanark Athletic 1 Windlaw 2

Summing-Up: A pretty poor Windlaw performance in a game they should have won more convincingly. Failure to get a third goal put pressure on them near the end as Third Lanark to their credit, never once gave up. A far stiffer test lies ahead next Saturday in the home West Of Scotland cup clash against Garrowhill Thistle.

Star Man- Benny Carey- produced yet another superb performance and led the line brilliantly with two excellent finishes. His strike partner Scott Williamson also deserves praise for a hard-working shift. The goals will surely flow for him soon and someone will suffer badly. Tierney and Stuart in defence and Larkin in midfield also get noteworthy mentions.
