CAREY FIRES WINDLAW TO BIGGEST WIN OF SEASON

Colin Sinclair returned to defence in place of John Paul Stuart. Stevie Paton was unavailable and in came Eck McCaig to centre-midfield. Benny Carey was partnered by Davie McGinlay. The pitch was in reasonable condition and the weather was superb.

Renfrew started better and Windlaw looked shaky. Renfrew took only 12 minutes to go ahead after slack play in Windlaw’s own half saw possession gifted and Renfrew broke away before their tall centre-forward slotted past Lunny. Windlaw responded on 20 minutes and Wullie Wilson played in Benny Carey inside the box and he steered his finish calmly past Renfrew’s young keeper. On the half-hour, the home side went in front after Wullie Wilson’s corner was missed by Danny McKenna but Davie McGinlay side-footed home with his right-foot from 7 yards.

Half Time: Windlaw 2 Renfrew Victoria 1

Windlaw went straight for the jugular and scored two early second-half goals. Wullie Wilson found Danny McKenna at the edge of the box and he netted with an audacious chip right out of the top drawer. The next goal was also magnificent. McKenna played in Wilson down the left and his brilliant cross was bravely nodded home by Benny Carey for his 18th goal of the campaign. Colin Sinclair rattled the post with a fine long-range effort but Windlaw’s shooting was becoming wild and erratic. Late on, a fifth was added after substitute Shaun Mallon’s excellent 20 yard shot seemed to hit the underside of the bar and bounce over the line. Davie McGinlay followed in and smashed home from 2 yards out.

Full Time: Windlaw 5 Renfrew Victoria 1

Windlaw Star Man- Benny Carey- who else could have taken the award after this performance. He bullied Renfrew all night long and scored two fine goals while making chances for others. Also a noteable mention to Wullie Wilson for helping set up four of the five goals.

Verdict- An excellent result for Windlaw but bizarrely not a vintage performance. Defensively, we looked a bit unsure in the first half but overall, we could have scored double the amount we did. Good to bounce back so quickly after the Crosslands defeat and again, this speaks volumes for the character of the players.
