WINDLAW SLUMP CONTINUES

Windlaw made four changes from last week’s hammering from Giffnock Soccer Centre with Brennan, Wilson, Turner and McGregor replacing Montgomery, Stevenson, McKenna and Currie. The plan to rest John Lunny who had already played 26 games this season backfired as he had to fill in at centre-half such was our shortage of bodies and defenders in particular.John Paul Stuart moved to right back to accommodate the switch.

Windlaw started much more solidly than in recent weeks and the make-shift back five that were hastily threw together, coped well with any Orchard Park attacks. In fact, Jim Brennan had no save of note to make in the first-half at all. Wullie Wilson’s superb free-kick crashed off the crossbar and away to safety on 24 minutes. On 38 minutes, Windlaw blew a golden chance to take the lead. Benny Carey unselfishly played in Anthony Larkin just inside the box but from a tightish angle he hit the side-netting when he should have done better.

Orchard Park took a controversial lead on 56 minutes. Their forward blatantly dived in the box as he ran beside Wullie Thornton and after the attack was partially cleared, a strong run and shot from the edge of the box looped over Jim Brennan’s head and into the net. Amazingly referee Martin Keegan then booked the player for his dive but had awarded no free-kick against him for it! This was to signal a period of calamity. Minutes later as controversy still raged on, Jim Brennan took a goal-kick and slipped slightly in the run-up. This affected the kick and with little elevation it smacked off the same Orchard Park player standing at the edge of the box who had been booked and flew goalwards towards the corner of the net where Jim Brennan’s scampering dive couldn’t keep it out. Surely one of the most bizarre goals ever seen in Windlaw’s history. A third was added soon after when Brennan collided into McInally as he was headering a cross clear leaving two Orchard Park players to bundle the ball into the now, unprotected net. Windlaw got a late consolation in 80 minutes after substitute Shaun Mallon bundled a cross home that the otherwise excellent Orchard Park goalkeeper had fumbled.

Windlaw Man Of The Match:  John Lunny- for showing a tremendous attitude and adjusting to a centre-half role to help out the team.

Verdict: Another shocker of a performance indicative of just perhaps where the squad’s progress is at.
