WINDLAW SUFFER MUIREND MAULING
Changes galore as ever for Windlaw with Wullie Thornton missing through work commitments. His place was taken at left back by new signing Craig Logue. Graym Carroll came in at right-back with John Lunny back in goal and Scott Williamson returning upfront. Eck McCaig moved into the central midfield role with Stevie Paton and two other new boys Chris Gaghan and George McGregor, were on the bench. Even the referee was a late change with Tommy Gillon stepping in when John McDowall was scheduled for the game. High flying Muirend were marshalled by their experienced skipper Tommy Docherty and despite the horrendous weather conditions of the past 24 hours, the pitch was heavy but still in good condition.
Windlaw began with a strong wind behind them but it was a tame start for both sides with little goalmouth action and Windlaw looked comfortable for the first 20 minutes before the predictable script unfolded. Muirend then bagged three quickfire goals through sloppy marking and less than solid tackling to leave the game almost dead and buried just before half-time. To make matters worse Craig Logue had suffered a bad knee injury and had to be replaced at half-time by Shaun Mallon as the injury curse continues.
Muirend had the better of the second-half with the wind behind them now and forced a few corners and attacked quite frequently. By now, Windlaw had accepted their fate and the fight was minimal. Muirend notched a fourth after a cross from their left deep into Windlaw’s box was neatly headed home after more farcical defending. Then the pantomime season really began with Muirend’s keeper about to appear in the thick of it. It was probably designed to involve him in the game somehow. He somewhat bizarrely dropped a through ball that he had already collected to allow Scott Williamson to walk in his first goal of the season in the 78th minute. Five minutes later though, he was to atone for this when he got on the scoresheet himself! A huge wind-assisted kick from hand bounced over the Windlaw defence and as Lunny came to the edge of his box to collect, he came a step too far and the ball fizzed over his head and straight into the net. This was to complete a very rare bad day for the big keeper who has had a fine season despite the farce in front of him. Late on and despite a big lead, Muirend waded in with some very dangerous tackles that the hapless referee Gillon failed to punish.
Verdict: A woeful showing bereft of fight or thought.
