Windlaw made two changes from last week’s victory over Third Lanark with Wullie Wilson and Alan O’Neill replacing Allan Dougall and injured skipper Bruce Tierney. Ian Baird came in on the bench to boost the squad beside Craig Montgomery.
The first was a fairly dull and scrappy affair with very little in the way of good chances. Benny Carey did miss a good chance on 16 minutes though, when Alan O’Neil’s nicely weighted ball over the top put him in on the Garrowhill keeper Devine. Devine stood up well though and blocked the shot and smothered the rebound. On 24 minutes Lunny produced an absolutely stunning save to keep the scoreline blank when he miracolously flicked a header from 10 yards round his right hand post when it appeared to be almost behind him. Windlaw were content with the first half outcome as Garrowhill looked to be coming increasingly frustrated with their performance.
Scott Williamson mised a good chance on 55 minutes to open his season’s account when Benny Carey’s knock on deflected wickedly into his path putting him in on goal, however he rushed his finish and put it wide. This was only to delay the opener by minutes though as Windlaw did take the lead when a beautifully flighted free-kick from Stevie Paton saw Benny Carey completely evade his marker and he side-footed home a sliding right foot finish into the top corner for a shock lead. Garrowhill looked stunned and unable to waken from their slumber. The game seemed to be slipping away from them .On 64 minutes, Windlaw manager Stevie Thomson then replaced Alan O’Neil with debutant Ryan Turner with Wullie Wilson going to right-back and Danny McKenna going into the gap vacated by Wilson’s move from central midfield. Garrowhill forced an equaliser on 70 minutes when a basic throw-in into the Windlaw box was flicked on completely unchallenged and nodded home from a couple of yards out. This was the boost Garrowhill needed and from then on, there was only going to be one winner. Their second goal on 76 minutes was a superb finish as their forward evaded a couple of challenges at the edge of the box and cracked a right-footed shot in off Lunny’s left hand post with the keeper clutching thin air. Windlaw made two further changes with Montgomery and Baird replacing Williamson and Paton before Garrowhill wrapped up the game on 84 minutes. A corner swung deep to Windlaw’s back-post was won by a Garrowhill player’s header across goal and from 3 yards out and under pressure, McInally’s attempted headed clearance richoted past Lunny to give the visitors victory.
Summing-Up: A major disappointment for a Windlaw side who should have had this game in the bag. Naïve defending throughout the team and a tendency to rely solely on Benny Carey’s goals could have a major impact soon unless these issues are addressed.
Star Man- John Lunny- commanding all day and had no chance with any of the goals. Absolutely magnificent first half save. Honourable mentions also go to Stevie Paton and Wullie Wilson in midfield.
