GARNOCK EDGE IT TO SEAL VICTORY

Windlaw had granted their Rangers fans special dispensation for a night-off and the squad was stretched to the bones. Shug Neeson returned to help out in central defence with a host of defenders missing. Weather conditions were excellent, although the pitch was again very fiery in the central areas.

Windlaw struck immediately when goal-machine Benny Carey headed home his 19th goal of the season with the Valley defence in some disarray. Minutes later, Windlaw were denied a spot-kick when Carey was upended as he chased a loose ball in the box. Ref Gillon disagreed and Valley were off the hook. Valley gradually settled and the tackling was fierce from both sides. They equalised on 22 minutes after a corner was headed home from close range. Sharp then forced Lunny into a very good save after an excellent turn and shot. Both sides tried to create openings but they were few and far between as the half wore on.

Half Time: Windlaw 1 Garnock Valley 1

The play started getting stretched after the break and Garnock seemed more intent on the three points they needed to clinch promotion. They were given another let off though when Allan Dougall was upended in the box and a penalty should have been awarded. Again referee Gillon refused to award it. With 15 minutes remaining Garnock got the winner after Windlaw failed to react quickly at a corner for the second time and the ball was smashed past Lunny from 7 yards out. Windlaw threw on all three subs as the legs tired but Garnock were resolute and could have got a third on the break as Windlaw committed bodies forward in search of an equaliser. Sadly, it wasn’t to be and the final whistle ended Windlaw’s season as Garnock still chase a treble with two semi-finals to play yet.

Full Time: Windlaw 1 Garnock Valley 2

Windlaw Star Man- Shug Neeson- attacked the ball very well in an unfamiliar position and also used it well. Used his experience to great effect.

Verdict- Another hard-working shift from the side but ultimately, we did not look like scoring in the second-half. With nothing to play for, Windlaw couldn’t break Garnock down after the decisive second goal and we congratulate them on the title and promotion. They’ve been worthy champions and the night belonged to them.
