WINDLAW DENT GSC's TITLE HOPES

Windlaw suffered a late blow when skipper McCaig was ruled out in the morning before the game. Davie McGinley partnered Benny Carey up top on an excellent playing surface at the picturesque Huntly Park.

Windlaw started pretty well and were getting joy down the left wing with Wilson, McKenna, Carey and McGinley linking up well. The first big chance came for GSC straight from a kick-out as Caldwell ran clean through. However Lunny stood up well and parried the shot to safety. Windlaw then started to turn the screw and were forcing a series of corners and a few near misses. From one of these corners, Benny Carey forced home his 16th goal of the season from close range to continue his remarkable run. The big man was terrorising the GSC defence who had no answer to his aerial dominance. The home team tried to respond and Lunny had to make a smart save from close range and tip over the bar after a long throw wasn’t dealt with properly. Windlaw though were looking for a second goal and were deserving of one. McGinley almost caught Sommerville out at his near post with a 25 yard effort but the big keeper just got it round the post. The half continued with Windlaw well on top but unable to get that elusive second goal.

GSC again tried to rally straight from kick-off but Thornton and Sinclair were defending superbly. The long kicks from Lunny were starting to give GSC problems though and their defenders were struggling to clear them at times. Ian Baird went off to be replaced by Bruce Tierney with Tierney taking up Wullie Wilson’s defensive duties and the latter moving into midfield. With the home team desperate for the points to mount a title bid, they began to get more agitated and their discipline waned with referee Jim Ritchie producing a couple of yellow cards. Near the end, Davie McGinley missed two good chances to wrap up the points but both went begging. Colin Sinclair then produced a stunning block to prevent sub Tony O’Donnell from firing home after he was put clear. Lunny made a couple of decent late saves to ensure the points went back to Castlemilk much to the annoyance of a frustrated young home side.

Windlaw Star Man- Wullie Thornton- one of the team’s unsung heroes enjoyed a superb defensive performance and won everything all day. Special mentions also to Benny Carey, Allan Dougall and Colin Sinclair.

Verdict- A very good Windlaw performance which thoroughly merited the three points. GSC couldn’t get going at all and by the time they did it was too late. They remain an excellent young side and their victory in Castlemilk remains the best performance against us all season. Windlaw will hope for a better start next season from which to build on.
