Match Report

Greater Glasgow Premier AFL: Division 3
10th May 2008
Woodfarm Complex, Giffnock
Crosslands 2

Windlaw 0

Team: Lunny, McInally, Stuart, Tierney, Wilson, Paton (McCaig), Baird (A.Dougall), Breslin, McKenna, Carey, McKenzie (D.McGregor)

Huge pre-match problems for Windlaw. Thornton was suspended and George McGregor and Kevin Black were unavailable. John Paul Stuart came in at the back and in came new boys Joe Breslin and Robbie McKenzie. Stevie Paton also returned in midfield.

Both sides started poorly and goalmouth action was very rare. The game had an end-of-season look about it. Ian Baird had a decent chance though after 8 minutes but he failed to hit the target. Baird’s game didn’t last long though when he had to go off injured after a crude challenge at the edge of his own box. Allan Dougall came on to replace him. Crosslands defence looked strong and secure and Carey and McKenzie were finding few openings. McKenzie did though force a good save from the Crosslands keeper. Crosslands best effort came from a superb shot from the edge of the box which fizzed an inch wide of the post. On 37 minutes though, they got the goal they deserved when a long ball eluded the Windlaw defence and their forward latched onto it and coolly lobbed Lunny.

Half Time: Crosslands 1 Windlaw 0

Windlaw tried to rally after the break but it simply wasn’t happening. Eck McCaig replaced Stevie Paton in midfield but both defences were generally on top. McInally was booked for a challenge then Crossland’s Uppal started a ruck which almost got out of hand. Crosslands got their second goal on 82 minutes as Windlaw pressed forward. Their forward held off Stuart and despite Lunny saving his initial effort, he recovered to smash his second effort high into the net. With a minute remaining, McInally received a second yellow and a red by Magoogan after a tackle at the edge of the box. It just goes to show that patience is a virtue as the star of the show finally got the man he’s been gunning for all season.

Full Time: Crosslands 2 Windlaw 0

Summing-Up: Crosslands roughly deserved this victory and Windlaw never got going at all. The fatigue finally looked to have caught up with the players and too much has been asked of too few. Windlaw couldn’t match Crossland’s endeavour and as a result they lost the battle and were unable to cut them open. A real disappointment given the recent efforts of the team.

Star Man- Bruce Tierney again defended superbly and stuck to his task excellently. His attitude and form have been a real credit all season.
