MAGICAL McKENNA DOUBLE SEALS VICTORY

Danny McKennaWindlaw made only one change from last week’s victory over Alba Thistle with Colin Carmichael replacing the unavailable Wullie Wilson in central midfield and Allan Dougall and Danny McKenna made the subs bench alongside Graym Carroll and Shaun Mallon. The big pitch was in excellent condition with the weather as good as it could be for an autumnal Saturday afternoon.

A nervy-looking Windlaw made the worst start possible and lost a goal inside only 90 seconds. After possession was surrendered in our own half, Busby carved Windlaw open down their left wing and an inviting ball put towards the six yard box was smashed into the net in off the underside of the bar as Lunny’s left foot failed to keep out the powerful shot from the onrushing Busby midfielder. Busby took great confidence from this and were zipping the ball about with great confidence with their two central midfielders dictating the early stages. To their credit though, Windlaw hung in and refused to buckle although we were conceding possession cheaply at times. Our perseverance paid off when skipper Benny Carey equalised on 23 minutes. Busby conceded a free-kick 10 yards inside their own half and Colin Carmichael flighted a superb free-kick deep into the Busby box where Carey had evaded his marker and as the keeper advanced he powered a strong header over him for his tenth goal of a very productive season. The big man’s joy however was short-lived as a knock on the groin left him unable to continue. His replacement upfront was Danny McKenna and this was to prove significant for the remainder of the game.T he rest of the half was fairly even and chanceless although Windlaw would have been the happier of the two to reach half-time on level terms with Busby having the better of the first half.

Straight from the restart, Windlaw looked hungry and went at Busby and the bulk of the play was camped inside the Busby half as Windlaw stepped up a gear. McGinlay and McKenna were giving Busby’s defence a torrid time now with McGinlay’s unselfish hold-up play a tremendous outlet. On 54 minutes Danny McKenna gave Windlaw a deserved lead with a piece of absolute brilliance. As a ball rebounded to him some 35 yards out, he took one quick look at the Busby keeper who was on his six-yard box and crashed a magnificent dipping, swerving shot straight over his head and into the net. Genius stuff. If that was good, he scored arguably an even better goal on 71 minutes to wrap up the points. David McGinlay did well to clip a fine pass to McKenna just outside the Busby box and he swivelled and without even looking, smashed a left foot shot that looped into the helpless keeper’s top left hand corner. Stevie Paton then went close to adding a fourth after a long throw into Busby’s box was helped onto him but he fired over from close range. Busby tried in the latter stages to get something back and Windlaw replaced Montgomery and Paton with Carroll and Mallon, but Busby’s best efforts were being dealt with confidently by a resolute Windlaw defence that now had Sinclair and Stuart in commanding form. The game was seen out in relative comfort for a deserved away Windlaw victory.

Windlaw Man Of The Match:  Davie McGinlay- the former Busby man showed his old club what they’re missing by just earning the toughest MOTM award to call this season. He had to be good to better McKenna’s contribution plus the two Colins, Carmichael and Sinclair who used their experience to great effect. McGinlay’s unselfish leading of the line proved that theres much more to his game than just scoring goals.

Verdict: An excellent away day for Windlaw. They survived a very tricky opening and held firm when things were going against them.McKenna’s two strikes were worthy of winning any game, but they came in the middle of a superb second-half performance by Windlaw that Busby simply couldn’t match.
