Action Details

Windlaw arrived at Peterson Park for their first ever competitive match against the home side with an unchanged starting line-up from the opening day victory over Hogganfield Thistle.

The home side started well and Windlaw seemed unable to gain any momentum and struggled to adjust to Peterson Park’s formation. Peterson Park deservedly went ahead on 20 minutes with a well taken free-kick from 25 yards. Controversially, it was on the second re-take that the shot slightly wrong-footed John Lunny and flew past his despairing dive and his right hand to give Peterson Park a deserved lead. Windlaw’s problems increased when Zanda Dougall hobbled off to be replaced by Bruce Tierney. Windlaw then reshuffled slightly and began to look more settled in their search for an equaliser. The goal duly arrived on the half hour mark when Davie McGinley netted a superb first competitive goal for his new club. The big forward who had looked threatening throughout, cut in from the left hand side of the box and fizzed a superb left-foot daisy-cutting, angular drive in off the keeper’s left hand post for a great goal. Windlaw then looked inspired by this and minutes later, went in front when Benny Carey tapped in Wullie Thornton’s cross-cum shot from close range. To cap an amazing 15 minute spell, Windlaw got a third just before the break when Carey’s shot was parried out by the keeper to the edge of the box and Kevin McCann gratefully rammed home the rebound for his second goal of the season. An amazing comeback that left the home side looking shell-shocked.

Half-Time: Peterson Park 1 Windlaw 3

Windlaw started the second half looking for a killer fourth goal and in the first minute of the second half it duly arrived. Eck McCaig chipped a great ball over the home defence for Davie McGinley to home in on goal. He feinted to shoot, allowing the keeper to dive then dinked a fine chip over him to complete a classy finish. The remainder of the game was played out quite tamely by both sides. For Windlaw the job was done but they squandered a few chances to increase the lead further. Peterson Park looked beleaguered but continued plugging away. For Windlaw, Scott Stoddard and Danny McKenna replaced Benny Carey and Allan Dougall. The home side grabbed a consolation goal in the final minute when a long through ball into the Windlaw defence caused confusion between McInally and Lunny and the Peterson centre-forward latched onto the ball to prod past Lunny from close range. Like the Hogganfield game, this was a disappointing way to finish the game for Windlaw.

Full-Time: Peterson Park 2 Windlaw 4

Verdict: The middle half hour performance won this game for Windlaw. After a poor start and finish by them,Davie McGinley’s fine performance inspired an excellent spell that blew Peterson Park away. The loss of sloppy goals and poor concentration continues to be a concern.

Website Man Of The Match: Davie McGinley-great performance from the young hit-man who held it well and linked the play superbly. His two finishes were of a high standard and on this form,he could be a real handful for opposition defences this season.
